So… a “long” time ago I remember talking to my brother about shows that he watches… actually every so often “what are you watching” is a topic that comes up. Anyway… I remember Bruce talking about Hell’s Kitchen. I’d seen clips/previews from time to time but it never really “grabbed” me. It always looked like it was nothing other than this guy running around yelling at everyone else… dropping the “F-bomb” all the time and everything.
So…why am I bringing this up? Well… it was on the other night and nothing was set to TiVo so I decided to record it and watch it later (that’s something that I often do anymore). So… what do I think?
I’ll say that in some ways it reminds me of Top Chef… or I should say it reminds me of the Restaurant Wars segment of every season of Top Chef. In Top Chef you don’t get the yelling, screaming, spitting out food or things like that (normally) that you get in a massive volume in Hell’s Kitchen… but that’s about as close as I can get to what Hell’s Kitchen seems to me when compared to other TV shows.
If I were to try and come up with a non-TV type of reference then I think the best way to comment about Hell’s Kitchen is that Chef Ramsay (the key person in the show… he is the person doing most of the yelling and such) acts like a TI or DI (Training Instructor or Drill Instructor) from a military basic training camp. I see a good bit of what my TI/DI did when we showed up as new recruits that Chef Ramsay is doing with these people. Not that I think his goal is the same as what a TI/DI is doing, but I see a similar style.
Anyway… anyone who wants to watch previous Hell’s Kitchen episodes can go to Hulu and watch complete episodes (as well as just clips if you want).
